The kid who won the lottery

“So how does it feel to become a grandma?“ is my favorite question these days. And all I can say is… Like “When love takes over (Yeah-ah-eah)!” I’ve been walking on sunshine since May 3, the day my first grandson was born. William arrived in his own unique way, like a lightning bolt, making stories before he even drew his first breath.

Russell and Eveline, the expecting parents, had fully prepared for the delivery, but as we know, this is the one life activity that‘s highly unpredictable, and oh boy, who would have guessed where this baby would chose to be born?! Bed? Hospital? Car? Floor? Oh no, way too predictable! This kid chose the toilet, to come out in one swell swoop, landing IN THE TOILET! At home.

Russell picked him up from the toilet bowl, rescuing him from his first crazy adventure of which I’m sure there will be plenty more to come, seeing that he already has a hankering for the audacious. The ambulance arrived within 15 minutes and paramedics ensured that both baby and mommy were ok before taking them to the hospital for some trauma recovery. What a hero mommy!

They say that the joy of grandkids outdoes having your own kids, and here I am enjoying every moment of discovering these new delights. So far the greatest joy is seeing my kid become a dad. Hearing him speak of the strong bond of love that he’s discovering, seeing him and Eveline exploring the demands of the little one. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a happier dad than Russell (Seriously! Look at these photos!) And what better wish could I have for my grandson? That he’s loved and cherished by his dad, adored and nourished by his mom.

Oh man did this kid win the parents’ lottery! Probably one of the most important factors for a person’s well-being is the character of their parents, their connection and their presence. And as we know, not all fathers chose to be present in their kids lives, or chose to be good for their kids. Unfortunately, too many men fuck off, creating wounds that cause so much pain, multiplying down generations and damaging relationships. And here is Russell, becoming a father and choosing to end the negative cycle, actively committing to being the dad he wished he had. The dad that Kenny longed for (are there any stronger words of love from a younger brother than, ”I wish you were my dad”). William, you picked well. And as a bonus you’ve got me as your Farmor (granny) which isn’t too bad either.

So let’s see if Williams early interest indicates that he‘ll become a Master Diver, or pursue a career in bobsledding?! Maybe a plumber? Even if he chooses to become a Homemaker (Russells career ambition when he was in kindergarten) or a hip hop artist (uncle Kenny’s dream), I know that his life will be one filled with love. And what more could I wish for my grandson? He may have won the parent lottery, but I’m ready for this granny challenge!
